Just two months into his tenure as the Washington Redskins head coach, Mike Shanahan is at a crossroads. In late April, he will be making what could end up the being his biggest decision as coach of the Redskins.
The Redskins pick in the top five in this year's NFL draft, and with that comes the pressure of deciding to go with a franchise quarterback or a franchise left tackle to shore up the woeful protection up front.
Mike Mayock of NFL Network said that "the franchise QB trumps everything," but Shanahan has to consider that the Redskins might already have a QB capable of taking them to the promised land in Jason Campbell.
Campbell isn't a world-beater, but he has shown poise and his numbers have steadily risen since becoming the starting QB. He threw for 20 TDs and over 3,600 yards last year behind a line that surrendered 46 sacks.
He struggled with reading defenses quickly and his accuracy was questionable, but he still showed flashes of leadership and playmaking abilities that led many to believe that solid coaching and good protection would make Campbell a winner.
So Shanahan came to town with this dilemma on his hands. Should he stick with Campbell and build around him or start afresh with a new face of the franchise?
The No. 4 pick in the draft will tell all.
All the experts believe Shanahan will opt for a quarterback. The prospect Sam Bradford or Jimmy Clausen starting for the Burgundy and Gold is too tempting for him to pass up.
Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen, left, Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, center, talk with Texas' Colt McCoy during the NFL football scouting combine in Indianapolis.
Both Bradford and Clausen have far more potential than Campbell. Each is a decorated passer with plenty of hype. Bradford in particular seems to be a special player, but he likely wouldn't start until Shanahan settles the offensive line situation.
So it comes down to how Shanahan feels about the offensive line. The line only has one starter set in stone (left guard Derrick Dockery), and the Redskins will likely need to bring in at least four new faces there.
Russell Okung is the top tackle in the draft. He is athletic, has all the makings of elite left tackle and fits in Shanahan's zone blocking scheme. He's an intriguing prospect at No. 4 especially if Bradford is selected before the Redskins are on the clock.
However, should it come down to Bradford or Okung, Shanahan will be faced with a tough decision.
Does Campbell have the ability to lead the Redskins to a Super Bowl provided he receives protection? Or should Shanahan play the long game and slowly build a team with boy wonder Sam Bradford?
QB or not QB? That is the question.
