Who do you hate? I mean truly dislike with all your energy, somebody you go out of the way to openly insult? For most of us, the list is pretty short if not non-existent. Humans should not hate other humans.

But when it comes to sports, our hate is out in the open. The Yankees hate the Red Sox, Duke hates North Carolina and Brett Favre hates the idea of retirement. And no division in all of sports is more hate-filled than the NFC East. So here at NFL Blog Blitz, we asked all our Giants, Eagles, Cowboys and Redskins bloggers to rank the other three team’s in the division in terms of hate, with one being the most hated and three being the least. All six inter-division matchups have had classic battles over the years, and that is reflected in the list. Here is the rankings of the Eagles writers, but we suggest you visit the Cowboys, Redskins and Giants pages as well to see what they think also.

3. Washington

If there's a more laughable franchise in sports than these jerkoffs, I'm not sure who it is. Minge extraordinaire Danielle Snyder pays more for mediocrity than Lamar Odom or Omar Minaya. Haynesworth? Yeah, brainiac, he's the answer. No need for a QB in this league...

Also, their fans- those mincing Potomac jerks- Screw you guys. You are the lamest group of losers I think I've ever come across. You're more fugaze than Giants fans and you should jump into the Potomac to avoid the sting of yet another sub par season.

2. New York

Screw these guys too. With their stupid Super Bowl and their smug rich boy fans. I went into the Meadowlands head to tail in Birds' gear during the Super Bowl run (OUR Super Bowl run- '04) and flapped my birdie wings in all their smug botoxed faces. I did solo 'Fly Eagles Fly' after touchdowns and talked smack for four quarters. I heard nary a word in opposition. Think that would fly at the Linc? If a Giants fan came in and was as big a jerk as I was, he'd end up in traction. They're more likable than the Cowboys because Eli looks like a little kid and Plaxico, Tiki and Strahan are gone, but I still hate them very much.

1. Dallas

As a Birds fan, you've got to hate the Cowboys the most. It's just in our blood... Like Cheez Wiz.

I remember playing them on MNF in high school and burning Cowboys gear in effigy on the sidewalk outside Kevin Zvargulis' house. They just stand for everything we hate. From their ego-maniacal, plastic faced owner- and his shrine to capitalism- to their lost-looking Red Beaulieu coach to their overrated, celeb-dating douche quarterback. They're slightly more likable sans T.O., but I'll tell you, they're still the worst. I'm not sure there have been more satisfying wins in my sports fan career than going into Dallas and messing them up so badly the last two seasons. Screw the Cowboys and all their ugly hick fans.

Dallas, New York, Philadelphia, and Redskins fans all have two things in common – they love their team and they absolutely hate every other team in the division. This is no surprise – the NFC (B)East is more often than not comprised of four quality teams, and it’s not unusual to see twoteams from this division reach the playoffs. But perhaps the true beauty of this division lies in its history – all four teams could produce an extensive anthology of grudge-match, smash-mouth battles with each of their divisional opponents. And that’s what it really comes down to – no matter when they meet (early, middle, or end of season); no matter what their place in the standings; and no matter what the implications, NFC East battles are always hard fought, and, more importantly, either side can win on any given day, regardless of any disparity in talent. Fans of any of these four teams must respect their NFC East opponents, because they know that all records and statistics can be thrown out the window when they collide. The only real question is where the other three teams rank on the scale of most hated to least hated.

I’ve given this a lot of thought. I know where I stand, but am curious about what other fellow Eagles fans think. I’ve asked family members and friends who are also Eagles fans. I even had to cover a conference in Philadelphia yesterday and, in between sessions, polled random strangers outside who were wearing Philly sportswear, and came to the following conclusion:

Eagles fans who are teenagers to about 25 years old hate the Giants more. Their main reasoning is because they feel the Giants are more of a threat to win the division, while they think the Cowboys are a joke.

All Eagles fans in their late twenties and older instantly told me that they hated the Cowboys. They said that it is because of the way they were raised, and many of them rattled off Dallas players that they’ve hated over the years, from Irvin to TO and Aikman to Romo. Almost everyone also mentioned how much they can’t stand Jerry Jones.

So where do I stand? I am without a doubt in the latter group. Not only can I not stand the Cowboys players and management, but I also think that their fan base is the most obnoxious group of phony people you could ever assemble. I live in the Northeast and see people wearing Cowboys jerseys, coats, hat, etc everywhere I go. The worst part is that, in many cases, the individual has never even stepped foot in Texas. Where’s the authenticity; where’s the sincerity in never having visited your “beloved” team’s field?

The bottom line here is that there are many variables involved when NFC East fans are asked to evaluate the level of intolerance for the rest of the teams in the division. However, there are three major ones that should help anyone make this assessment, and I have devised a simple and straightforward “Hate Scale” for fans to figure it out. For Eagles fans, this can be crucial in deciding who you hate more – the Cowboys or the Giants. (We all know that the Redskins just aren’t even close to these guys.) In my mind, the top three reasons for hating on another team are the following: their players/management; their fan base and, to an extent, their fan base’s proximity to you; and how much of a threat they are to win the division. For me, these three are in the proper order, but for others it might be different. But the beauty of this scale is that you can adjust accordingly. Order these three variables in whichever way applies best to you, and then, on a scale of 1 to 10, and then apply the following rules: for your most important factor, multiply the number by 2. For your second, multiply by 1.5. The third factor stands as is. Add it up, divide by three, and you have your hate number – highest number means that you hate that team the most. For example, we’ll use my personal calculations:

Cowboys:

Players/Management – 10 (x 2) = 20

Fan Base – 10 x (1.5) = 15

Divisional Threat – 5

Total: 40/3 = 13 1/3

Giants:

Players/Management – 7 (x 2) = 14

Fan Base – 10 (x 1.5) = 15

Divisional Threat – 9

Total: 38/3 = 12 2/3

So, there you have it. Like I said, adjust accordingly and figure out your mathematical hatred, which is just a tangible figure for the way you are feeling on the inside. You’re welcome.
