Playoff Hopes Crumble Alongside Stadium

I am embarrassed to be a Giants fan. I am ashamed that I cut my vacation a day short to come home to see the Giants play Carolina at the Stadium. I am angry at myself to believe that the Giants defense had actually halted their horrific tackling and pass coverage. I am annoyed at myself to believe that the Giants would actually hold their heads high and win their last two games and possibly make the playoffs.
How bad did it get? After the game, Osi Umenyiora implied that he has played his last home game as a Giant. He didn't mention whether it was because he thought the Giants didn't want him, or if that he wanted to leave. He was pissed off that he only played a handful of plays in this afternoon's debacle and I agree with him. Yes, he hasn't been the Osi of old, especially against the run. I also understand the Giants wanted to stop the run and make the quarterback. However, all the Giants did Sunday was make Jonathan Stewart look like Barry Sanders and Matt Moore look like Johnny Unitas. Pathetic!!
The Giants disgraced the uniform Sunday. They played their last home game at Giants Stadium and embarrassed themselves in front of the greatest Giant of all time, Lawrence Taylor, who was honored at halftime. It got so bad at the Stadium that the only cheers the Giants got was when the Panthers got a penalty. It was that bad.
Let's go through some of the particulars. I have been pleading for weeks, not just in my articles here, but also in a Letter to the Editor that appeared in the NY Post a few weeks ago, that Bill Sheridan be relieved of his duties. He has been absolutely horrible. He is clueless. His schemes don't work, he has not passion, and the players don't believe in him. He should have been fired the day after the Broncos game. The Giants had a long week and it would have been easy to promote somebody from within. Instead, Coach Cough didn't listen to my advice and the Giants proceeded to be torched defensively by the Cowboys, Eagles and Panthers. Yes, those same Panthers with injuries up and down their offensive line, without their starting QB and without DeAngelo Williams. This Giants defense is the worst in decades. Yes, I realize that the Giants have played almost all year without rising star Kenny Phillips and most of the year without Aaron Ross. However, Ross is a not a good ball player and the safeties are always out of position. Not all of this mess can be blamed on injuries. I am pleading for Jerry Reese to fire Fire Bill Sheridan one week from tonight (assuming the Giants start golf season next week, otherwise the following week).
Here are the details of Sunday's game:
QB: Manning was on fire on the first drive. He was accurate and in control. A touchdown pass was called back for holding. On third and long, they got the first down, but Manningham fumbled it away. Manning overthrew Smith on a drive and had an interception. Overall, the Giants kept throwing 2 yard passes and that was not acceptable.
RB: The Brandon Jacobs of old seems to be the Brandon Jacobs of old. He hasn't busted any long runs this entire season. Last year, he did have some short runs, but would break those 20 to 40 yard runs. Not this year. Bradshaw, who has been playing hurt all year, needs to get more touches. He is electric.
O Line: Gave up an early sack to Peppers to whom I owe an apology. In last week's article, I claimed that Peppers was on the downside of his career. I am mistaken. He is still a force and showed his skills. The offensive line held up decently considering Seubert and McKenzie did not start. Beatty is the tackle of the future, but is a natural left tackle. He might be moved there next year with Diehl either moving to guard or as a tackle on the other side.
WR: Bad fumble by Manningham. Turned the momentum around. Giants moved down the field and even overcame the holding penalty only to have Manningham give it up. Nicks dropped an easy pass as well, but he is a rising star.
D Line: An absolute joke. I still have no idea why Osi is on the bench, but it really didn't matter. Outside of Justin Tuck, there is not a player amongst the rest of them. They have a soft underbelly and Stewart ran wild through big holes.
LB: We don't have a playmaker at all. Michael Boley is good, but not great. Goff is improving, but not making enough plays. Danny Clark is not good at all and I expect him to be gone by next year. I have no idea why Clint Sintim doesn't get more playing time. He can't be any worse than the crap they are putting on the field now. He showed promise in the pre-season, but hasn't really been seen since.
DBs: Webster and Ross are hurt forcing the Giants to play inadequate backups Kevin Dockery and Bruce Johson. Kevin Dockery was frustrated that he hasn't been playing and now we know why. He couldn't contain Smith and was called for a pass interference penalty. He was beaten more than a dusty rug all day long. He even whiffed on tackles on at least two occasions. He was absolutely horrific.
Safeties: Aaron Rouse and Michael Johnson are just very slow to the ball. They are better than the awful CC Brown, but not by much. They are rarely near the receiver oftentimes finding themselves as much as ten yards away from a pass play. Our safeties have been killing us all year. Boy, do we miss Kenny Phillips.
Coaching: I can't be more clear. The Giants need to fire Bill Sheridan the day after the season ends. He is awful. From bad schemes and lack of player confidence to having defensive ends covering running backs or tight ends, Sheridan is an awful coach. Please, Jerry Reese, fire him immediately. With respect to Kevin KillDrive, he needs to go away as well. Hopefully, Buffalo will take this train wreck away from the new stadium. His playcalling is too conservative and very predictable. Yes, once again, they are running the ball on 2nd and 10. Yes, I know, I write that in my article every week. However, if I notice it, the coaches from the opposing teams who study film all day notice the Giants tendencies. Coach Cough needs to stay. Yes, I know, he isn't a good game coach, but the players actually do rally around him despite this week's game.
Jerry Reese: He has to take a lot of blame this year. He has done well with the draft, but not well with free agents. Rocky Bernard is useless and overweight. Canty has done nothing to earn his millions. Boley is good, but not worth the price they paid him.
Last year's Super Bowl halftime show featured Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, my favorite group. It would have been a perfect day had the Giants been there to win the game and repeat as champions, but Burress had to shoot himself in the leg. This year, Springsteen's song Wrecking Ball was played at Giants Stadium, but once again, the Giants didn't show up. It would have been a perfect day.
