Both the Saints and Colts have endured periods during which their fans wore paper bags over their heads in disgrace, but now, thanks to excellent quarterbacks and top-notch organizational consistency, they have arrived as dominant teams. In their history, though, particularly in their most recent meetings, it has been all Indy.
Week 1, 2006
The Colts, fresh off their 2005 Super Bowl title, rebounded from a sloppy first half to beat the Saints, 41-10. The score was tied at 10 at halftime, but the Colts put up 31 unanswered points in the second half to breeze to the win. Most importantly for Indy, a defense that lost four starters from the ’05 team shut down Drew Brees and the Saints offense. Among the starters lost was CB Jason David, who went to the Saints only to be burned for two touchdowns in the game.
Week 4, 2003
A 55-21 laugher in favor of the Colts featured six touchdown passes by Peyton Manning, including three in the first quarter, and not much to remember for the Saints.
Week 4, 1998
In a reversal of roles, the undefeated Saints, met up with the winless Colts, and the game turned out as you could have predicted. But there was some excitement before it was over. In a back-and-forth affair, the Colts took a 6-0 lead on two field goals, but the Saints answered back with two of their own. In the fourth quarter, rookie QB Peyton Manning threw a touchdown to Marshall Faulk, only to have Danny Wuerffel throw a TD to tie the game. In overtime, it was Wuerffel again on a 33-yard TD to Cam Cleeland that sealed the win.
