Green Bay Gears Up For Kickoff Party

The NFL will kick off its 2011 season in Green Bay by throwing a huge party.
Titletown will be transformed into NFL Central as the league highlights the season opener with
events, parties and a free concert in front of Lambeau Field.
But, as it always seems to be with the NFL, the real star is the game itself.
The world champion Packers will take on the winners of the previous Super Bowl,
the New Orleans Saints.
As matchups go, this game may be one of the best of the season. It features two of the leagues
best head coaches in Sean Payton and Mike McCarthy, two of the league's most inventive and
aggressive defensive coordinators in Gregg Williams and Dom Capers and two of the league’s
best quarterbacks in Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers.
Both the Saints and the Packers are coming off seasons where injuries nearly derailed their
playoff hopes. In the case of the Saints, injuries kept them from going deep into the playoffs.
T.J. Lang vs. Saints Defensive Line
One of the big question marks for the defending champs going into the game is on the offensive
line. Lang takes over for Daryn Colledge, who left for Arizona in free agency, and will have to
deal with a revamped interior defensive line for the Saints. Williams will no doubt design a game
plan to test Lang with defensive linemen Shaun Rogers, Aubrayo Franklin and Sedrick Ellis as
well as blitzes by Jonathan Vilma and Malcolm Jenkins.
Aaron Rodgers vs Gregg Williams
If the line holds up, the task of figuring out the Saints' defensive plans will be on Rodgers. The
number of weapons the Packers have at the wide receiver and tight end position is greater than
ever, and it'll be hard for defenses to cover everyone. That may mean defenses, instead of
trying to cover, will decide to send blitz after blitz at Rodgers. It would not be surprising if that is
the Saints' gameplan since Williams likes to beat up quarterbacks to force poor play. Rodgers
has been great at exploiting blitz-happy defenses, and he'll need to do that again against the
Saints.
Mark Ingram vs. Packers Run Defense
Payton may decide the Packers’ offense is just too dangerous and decide to play keep away
football. While it came through in the clutch last year, the Packers defense was average against
the run. The Saints have retooled in the backfield -- letting Reggie Bush leave and bringing in
Darren Sproles and drafting Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram in the first round of the draft.
The potentially balanced attack the Saints may play could tire the Packers defense and keep
Rodgers safely on the sideline. The Packers simply have to stop the Saints from running early in
the game.
Dom Capers vs. Sean Payton
For fans of the strategy of football, this game will should be a clinic. Whatever game plan both
teams spent six months creating, they may have to throw it out in first minutes of the game.
Dom Capers’ defense is complex and designed to blind offenses with different looks, schemes,
alignments and blitzes. But Payton has seen a lot of it before and will have no problem adjusting
his offense for what the Packers will be doing. This will lead Capers to dip back into his
playbook and come up with something else. Whoever manages the chess game, the process of
adjusting to the adjustments, will win the game.
