Would You Rather Have Ford Or Rush As Owner?

Over the past few days, there has been a lot of controversy over the possibility of Rush Limbaugh becoming a minority owner of the St. Louis Rams. The Rams are a team somewhat desperate for a spark, and the conservative talk show host has clearly given the franchise a ton of headlines and publicity.  However, many fans, players, and even owners have come out in opposition to Limbaugh, who is accused by many of making divisive and racially insensitive comments.

Whether one agrees with Limbaugh’s comments is a subjective issue.  But would he make a good NFL minority owner?  The radio host, an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, would have a powerful microphone each weekday to promote his team.  Limbaugh would be one of the most influential, powerful NFL owners.

The state of Michigan is a fairly blue state, so the majority of Lions fans are probably not big Rush fanatics.  But with many blaming the Lions’ perennial woes on owner William Clay Ford, would fans rather have Limbaugh as the owner?

There is no answer to the question.  Each Lions fan probably has a different opinion on the issue.  But William Clay Ford has been a pretty bad owner for 45 years; the team has barely experienced any success since he took over the team in 1964.  Maybe a change in ownership, even to Rush, would be a good thing for Detroit.

Ford was not assessed much blame for the Lions’ 0-16 debacle in 2008, even though it was the owner who kept Matt Millen around for so long.  So maybe even the most liberal Detroit fans would take Rush Limbaugh with open arms over Ford.

Limbaugh, of course, will never be the owner of the Detroit Lions.  In fact, he will probably never become owner of an NFL team, even the St. Louis Rams, as he was reportedly dropped from the bid Wednesday.  But Lions fans: before you oppose Limbaugh’s ownership bid, think about whether you would take the controversial radio show host over William Clay Ford.  It might get the team a few more wins, even at the cost of controversy.

Ford is rather passive, while Limbaugh would be aggressive.  His confrontational style might lead to bulletin board material for opposing teams, but it would also energize the franchise.  I guarantee you that Millen would have been fired years earlier under Limbaugh’s watch.

But I understand why so many are against Limbaugh becoming an owner.  He has had a controversial record, and many NFL players have even voiced opposition to his bid.  So if Lions fans would rather have William Clay Ford as an owner, I completely understand.  Maybe Limbaugh should head to the nation’s capital, not for any sort of political reason but for another franchise.  There are a lot of Redskins fans in D.C. who would take just about anyone over current owner Dan Snyder. Even Rush.
