Have you ever watched 60 Minutes? You know the CBS news show on Sunday evenings? I only ask because I am certain the Detroit secondary has never watched the show. Heck, they still have not seen Mike Wallace! Ba da boom. Thank you, I will be here all week.
Perhaps my opening is a little unfair. Let’s try a little perspective. Last year the Steelers won the Super Bowl and the Lions went 0-16. Last Sunday in Detroit the Lions had the ball on the Pittsburgh 30-yard line with under two minutes and a chance to send the game in to overtime. Not bad really.
Daunte Culpepper was good. Being a long time Viking hater I would have told you his previous NFL success was predicated on throwing the ball up for Randy Moss. If he was going to have any success as a Lion it would be re-creating that situation with Calvin Johnson playing the role of Randy Moss. But you saw what happened on Sunday. Daunte had to play without Megatron and he proved he is a worthy NFL quarterback. I sure hope Cleveland does not have his cell number. I would actually like to see him play again this week and let Stafford get three full weeks of rest.
You can see it on the field and even hear it from all the player’s mouths that this year is different. While it might seem that it is just a single game difference when you compare last year to this year the gap is much wider than that. There is an urgency. I feel like you can see the seeds of belief that we can win this game being planted in this team. I really like how the linebackers are leading the team. Bringing in home state guys like Larry Foote and Julian Peterson and pairing them with the speedy Mr. Sims and Mr. Levy appears to be working. All kidding aside with our secondary it has been f-o-r-e-v-e-r since we recorded a pick six – way to go!
We have two big steps in front of us. The first is to beat a good team and we will get the chance to do that this Sunday when we play Green Bay. While the task is harder when you are the visitor, if the defense continues to improve they have a chance. The second step will be to win a game when we are the favorites and that is coming sooner rather than later as well.
After the bye week the pre-Rush Limbaugh Rams will visit Ford field and the Lions should be favored. It will be fun to watch how the Lions handle being the hunted rather than the hunter. Besides I can’t stand Andy Rooney.
