Cutler-Orton Watch: Week 15

It was another ugly week for Jay Cutler and the Bears.

And it was another week in which Kyle Orton didn’t do enough to keep Denver in the playoff hunt.

Cutler had two first-quarter interceptions that set up two Baltimore scores in a 31-7 Ravens victory.  His passer rating of 7.9 and three interceptions in all was one of the worst performances by a Bears quarterback in years, notwithstanding the Henry Burris era.

Orton, meanwhile, stood on the sidelines in the fourth quarter and watched JaMarcus Russell lead Oakland on a game-winning drive in a 20-19 Raiders win in Denver. Yes, that was JaMarcus Russell.

Here’s the breakdown of both quarterbacks this week, along with video compliments of the NFL Network:

JAY CUTLER

Team’s record: 5-9

Completions-attempts/percentage: 294-484 (60.7 percent)

Yards: 3,117 (222.6 yards per game; 6.44 yards per attempt)

Touchdowns: 19

Interceptions: 25 (leads the NFL)

Sacks: 31

Analysis: Cutler was spared the final six minutes of humiliation, as the Bears put mop-up man Caleb Hanie into the game. Cutler’s line: 10-of-27 for 94 yards, three interceptions, no touchdowns and two sacks. This spurred FOX analyst Brian Billick to say: “Coming into the season, I was a fan of Cutler’s. But he’s starting to look Jeff George-ish. What I mean is the unrealized potential. He has the ability, but they just haven’t seen it.” Look at how far Cutler has fallen in less than a season: From a 4,000-yard season and a trip to the Pro Bowl last year to comparisons to George this season. And we all remember George: Big mouth, big arm, bad attitude.

KYLE ORTON

Team’s record: 8-6

Completions-attempts/percentage: 277-444 (62.3 percent)

Yards: 3,282 (234.4 per game; 7.39per attempt)

Touchdowns:  17

Interceptions:  8

Sacks: 24

Analysis: The Broncos continue to keep it simple for Orton. But maybe it’s time to open things up for him. Four Matt Prater field goals and an Orton touchdown pass to Brandon Marshall aren’t enough to keep the Broncos in front, even at home. Orton was 19 of 34 for 278 yards and no interceptions, but Coach Josh McDaniels needs to give the reins to Orton and let him make plays, or the Broncos will be watching the playoffs from home again, just like they did last season with Cutler. Winning the division is out of the question. The wildcard is their only hope.
