"The stadium, which was rendered obsolete when the Dallas Cowboys moved to Arlington and its new $1.2 billion stadium last year, was imploded to make way for a future master-planned -- but as yet unidentified -- development, Irving city officials said.

To commemorate the event, local television stations did live broadcasts and ESPN's Chris Berman served as the master of ceremonies.

The demolition was triggered by 55 detonations -- each a half-second apart -- and thousands of tons of concrete crashed to the ground.

A pre-blast ceremony included a brilliant four-minute fireworks display. Casey Rogers, an 11-year-old Terrell boy who won an essay contest about his charity to help the homeless, pressed a button to ignite the explosions.

Once the fiery flashes could be seen flaring out of the structure, it took only about a minute to collapse like a domino display.

'Awesome!' Casey said, according to the Associated Press. 'It was better than I thought it would be.'" Full story.

"When it was open, Texas Stadium was fun.

Will it be revered as Lambeau Field, the Polo Grounds or old Yankee Stadium?

No. But Texas Stadium has its history.

It has the 10-day Billy Graham crusade in the fall of 1971. The Jackson 5. Garth Brooks. Madonna. James Brown. U2. Emmitt Smith breaking the rushing record. Mean Joe Greene filming his famous Coke television spot. Roger Staubach comebacks. Troy Aikman comebacks. Tony Dorsett runs. Drew Pearson catches. Randy White sacks and Tony Romo touchdown passes.

The roof was what made Texas Stadium, not its 381 luxury suites or the fact it hosted 30 'Monday Night Football' games." Full story.

"Randy White and Johm Fitzgerald were two of the former players on hand for the implosion. Crowds gathered along the closed highways surrounding the stadium and many paid $25 per car to park in the Red Lot across the street from Texas Stadium. At 7:07 a.m., Terrell's Casey Rogers pushed the button triggering implosion." Full story.

"I know most stadiums aren't super comfy. I can't imagine watching a December game in Chicago or Green Bay. But those places at least have atmosphere. All Texas Stadium had was a crowd that seemed more suited for the Masters golf tournament than a football game and a lot of concrete.

So as we waved goodbye to Texas Stadium, let us remember that it wasn't the stadium that brought us the memories, it was the teams playing in the stadium that brought us the memories. Those will stay with you with or without the giant eyesore off of Loop 12 in Irving, Texas." Full story.
