Eliminated from postseason contention before taking a snap Sunday at chilly Bank of America Stadium, the Panthers again defied expectations.
They looked solid.
Sunday night’s 26-7 victory over the Vikings was the Panthers’ most complete effort since Dec. ‘08. The 20-point fourth quarter was the Panthers’ top collective highlight in an otherwise disappointing campaign. The sudden action sequence woke a national television audience snoozing through the opening three quarters.
Let the ’10 auditions begin.
Here are Sunday’s positional grades, starting with the offense.
Quarterback: In his third start, Matt Moore needed a standout performance to rekindle the brass’ interest in his future services. He was solid, not spectacular. His three touchdowns will look good on his resume. Grade: B
Running Backs: Taking over for injured DeAngelo Williams (ankle), Jonathan Stewart (109 yards, 2 TDs) solidified his role as one of the league’s top backups, becoming the first back to top 100 yards against the vaunted Vikes in 36 games. Grade: A
After DeAngelo Williams was forced to the sidelines, Jonathan Stewart showed he has the potential to be a No. 1 running back by breaking the 100-yard barrier against a tough Minnesota defense.
Receivers/Tight Ends: With Moore at least looking down field, Steve Smith looks like Steve Smith again, hauling in nine catches for 157 yards and a TD. Nine different players caught at least one pass. Grade: B
Offensive Line: Missing their top two leaders and facing one of the NFL’s most feared defensive fronts, newcomers Geoff Schwartz, Travelle Wharton and Mackenzy Bernadeau & Co. dominated the Vikes. The reserves will benefit next offseason with this December experience. Grade: A
