Who Will Be The New Coach?

What's going to happen with the coaches? Your guess is as good as mine. I'd even go as far as saying that our guesses are as good as the "experts" from ESPN. They don't know, either. I'm not sure if anyone knows. But here's what things look like now.

Leslie Frazier - Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator - Said by the "insiders" to be the the front-runner in Buffalo, There's whispers that he's really got the inside track to the job, and we'll see what happens after the Vikings' season ends. Frazier is preparing for a clash with the Cowboys on Sunday. He interviewed with the Bills last week, and allegedly hit if off with GM Buddy Nix. It's not rocket science to say that Fraizer is the leader in the clubhouse right now, because outside of interim head coach Perry Fewell, he's apparently the only candidate to actually interview with the Bills thus far. Even with a potent Cowboy offense coming to the Favre-Dome, his players know the job search won't affect his coaching come Sunday.

Russ Grimm - Arizona Cardinals assistant head coach - He's been given permission to speak with the Bills front office, but an interview has yet to take place. The National Football Post and Arizona Republic said it could happen in the coming week. He's more worried about halting Drew Brees' dynamic offense in what should be another aerial show in New Orleans this weekend.

Brian Schottenheimer - New York Jets offensive coordinator - Another guy with his mind still on this post-season. Today, Buffalo was granted permission to meet with the young, but seemingly ingenious offensive coordinator, and reports have varied on his interest in becoming the next Bills head coach. He could interview sometime this week, but if the Jets win in San Diego, Bills brass will have to wait for a sit-down. However, there's also reports on ESPN saying he is just fine staying with Rex Ryan and the Jets.

Bill Cowher - Odd that I throw him all the way down here, huh? I did so because the chances of Cowher leading the Bills next season is becoming more unlikely everyday, for whatever reason. Buffalo seems like a perfect fit for the Super Bowl champion coach, so if he turns down the Bills, there's a chance he won't coach in 2010. Buffalo would fulfill his needs financially, he'd be handed the reins by the current Bills front office, and the cities of Buffalo and Pittsburgh are extremely similar in regards to weather, and fan base. They adore their football. Contrary to what the Peter King's of the world may tell you, I don't think you should count Cowher out yet.

Marty Schottenheimer - He's sitting in the same position as former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy. Every team would love to have either man roam their sidelines next season, but both seem to carry no interest. Apparently, Schottenheimer coming to Buffalo would only take a mere phone call from Nix, but this seems like the least likely outcome.

Other "stealth" (that's the word that's been thrown out recently) candidates include:

Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, Philadelphia defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, San Diego defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, and Stanford Cardinal head coach Jim Harbaugh. None of these coaches have been contacted by the Bills, and no interviews have been scheduled. We'll stay up-to-date if any changes occur.

For the anxious Bills fans out there, and believe me, I'm with you, the coaching search probably won't conclude until more teams are knocked out of the playoffs. In terms of finding a coach quickly, last weekend's Wild Card results couldn't have been worse for Buffalo.

Many of these contenders may be interviewed this week. If not, Nix will be forced to put the coaching search on hold. No interviews can be conducted until after the postseason with coaches whose teams advance beyond the divisional round.

This thing could drag on for a while ... stay tuned.
