Hot Stove Rumor: Cowher leaving door open for Bills, team staying in Buffalo long term?
According to Sal Capaccio from SalSports.com, the Buffalo Bills have met with Bill Cowher in person in the past two weeks. Capaccio said his sources are saying that Cowher is keeping the door open about the possibility of becoming the next Bills head coach. A source has told Capaccio that Cowher is very impressed with the Bills organization and recognizes the stability they have. He was told to keep an eye on Carolina and Tampa Bay because these teams are the Bills' biggest competition for Cowher. Carolina could be out now because John Fox will be asked back. The question is if he'll take the job again. He also said that although reports are saying that Cowher wants total control of all football operations, this is not completely true. He simply wants a GM that he can work together with.
His source, who has ties to the NFL and coaching circles, has heard that the Bills organization is perceived around the league as one of the most stable organizations in the league. The Bills have a succession plan in place in the event that Bills owner Ralph Wilson passes away. The source says that Wilson's "heirs" are also involved in this plan. This obviously is huge news to Bills fans because this is the first time that they have heard of any type of plan and that his "heirs" are involved. All past reports have said that the "heirs" were not interested in owning the team, due to the amount of tax they would have to pay to keep them in the Wilson family. If Ralph Wilson should leave the team to his wife, Mary, then they would have a lesser tax hit. Once again, this is huge news when you look at the long-term future of the Bills in Buffalo.
