Looking At What The Bills Might Be Doing

With the latest acquisitions of LB Andra Davis and DE Dwan Edwards to the new 3-4 defense, the Bills have remained quiet since then in the free agent market, but who could blame them? There are slim pickings out there right now, so don’t expect any more movement by the Bills until possibly after the draft.

Some interesting quotes have popped up lately from Bills GM Buddy Nix and new head coach Chan Gailey this past week at the league’s meetings in Orlando. A few of them have raised some eyebrows with Bills fans as the team prepares for the last month before Christmas Day (um, excuse me) the NFL Draft on April 22. Here are a few of those quotes from the Bills brass this past week:

ESPN.com AFC East blogger Tim Graham asks Bills GM Buddy Nix what he was doing on the eve of Free Agency:

"Sleep," he said. "They asked me if I was going to be there, I said 'Hell, no. I'm not doing that. I'm going to bed.' I still think you build through the draft, but you can't fill every hole, especially if you haven't been very good. We don't get excited about the first week or being up there at midnight and 12:01, signing somebody. We let it play itself out and make sure that the guys we get fit what we need and fill a need."

Graham then went on to ask Nix about the perception of the Bills losing ground in the AFC East with the other teams in the division making splashy moves:

"Everybody else in the division has been proactive and aggressive, trying to improve themselves, and I think most of them have in the offseason,” Nix said. “We're looking to build something solid so we can win consistently. We're not just trying to do it this year and then start over every year. Winning consistently is our goal."

Graham also spoke with Bills head coach Chan Gailey about the possibility of adding to the backfield in the draft:

"I don't mean to insinuate we'd take a running back with the first pick," Gailey said. "Right now, we only have two running backs on the roster. We've got to start to upgrade there in some way, shape or form. There are some good running backs in the draft this year different than what we've got. So change of pace, again, might be something you could do there with a different type of player. The guys that are coming out now, there's a bunch of those 5-9, 185-pound or 195-pound, quick-as-a-cat water bugs that are running backs-slash-receivers that might give you a little bit of a punch on the field, maybe make a big play."

Looking at those quotes, Bills fans can get a good idea on how the organization will be run from here on out. They don’t look to be big spenders through free agency, and Nix wants to do it the way he feels builds a competitive franchise, and that is through the draft.

As for Gailey’s recent comments, I don’t believe they bode well for the likes of Marshawn Lynch. I say that because with Fred Jackson getting an extension last season, and the way he produced on the field, warrants him the starting job in my opinion. In Gailey’s offense, he wants to add a playmaker with the skill set of Chargers RB Darren Sproles. There are a few options in this year’s draft that meet that criteria, and the main one could be available at pick #9 in the first round. Many will say that there is no way that the Bills would take a RB that high in the draft, considering all of the other needs this team has -- at LT, QB, NT, and LB to name a few.

Don’t be so sure.

Charles Davis of NFL Network believes the Bills will take RB C.J. Spiller out of Clemson. Spiller is projected to be the top running back taken in this year’s draft. At 5-11, 195, Spiller seems to be the type of running back that Gailey spoke about coveting in this year’s draft. He has amassed 3,500 yards and 32 touchdowns in his collegiate career. Last time I checked, the Bills have struggled to find the end zone the past few seasons. Spiller could help that cause immensely.

Although my crystal ball is currently out of order, I can’t make a prediction just yet on what the Bills might do come April 22, but I would not rule out a RB by the name of C.J. Spiller.
