Buffalo coach Chan Gailey had plenty to say in his first news conference, especially on subjects like what the Bills are thinking about doing at the quarterback position.
"This is a quarterback-driven league at this point," Gailey said in ESPN.com blogger Tim Graham's story. "It hasn't always been that way, but it seems to have become more so in the last decade or so. You have to have a quality player there. It does not have to be a big-name player. You just have to have quality production. That's the decision you're trying to make."
Graham also reported that Gailey briefly touched on the Bills thinking about making a trade for a veteran quarterback like Michael Vick, but said that he and his staff have yet to finish the evaluation process of the current quarterbacks on the roster, Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Brian Brohm.
"The staff got together completely yesterday," Gailey said in Graham's blog. "We've been spending the last day and a half going through the evaluation process. I've looked at them quite a bit, but I want the rest of the offensive staff to look at quarterbacks, and let's get a good evaluation of where we think we are today and where we need to be. Before we get to the first day of free agency we'll have a good idea of where we need to be."
Some websites, such as Profootballtalk.com, have taken Gailey's words in the context that the Bills are out to acquire a veteran quarterback in free agency. Though it could be a possibility, remember that Gailey's done well throughout his coaching career with developing unheralded quarterbacks.
Gailey also spoke to the media about Aaron Schobel, who said at the end of the season he'd consider retirement.
"I took from the conversation he has not decided, I think that's going to come with time. He's going to have to make a decision. We know what a great player he is. You know you'd like to have him on the Bills if we could make that happen. We'll see what he decides. I don't want to speak for him." said Gailey in Graham's blog.
