With the fresh hiring of new head coach Chan Gailey, some are content, some are angered, and some are just glad it's over. But if we wanted someone different from Dick Jauron, I think we landed our guy.
Members of the media, and we as fans, constantly harped on Jauron for his apparent lack of confidence, attitude, and toughness. Many believed the lackluster and timid play of the Buffalo Bills the past three seasons was a clear reflection on the head coach. I was in that majority. He had the players "respect," but for all the wrong reasons. Certain Buffalo players continually had Fridays off, the practices were rarely held outside in game conditions, and were normally pad-less. In a league like the NFL, that isn't going to fly on a regular basis. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail, remember.
Following Jauron's departure in November, Fred Jackson said he felt like a new player when Perry Fewell had the players strap on their pads in his first NFL practice as the interim head coach. Gailey seems to be one of those type of guys. He stressed toughness and discipline in his press conference, and spoke with confidence in what he planned to bring to the Bills organization. Something rarely seen from Jauron after a win or a loss.
Though I'm glad that he seems to have a more of a fiery, in-your-face personality, that's not the most impressive difference between he and Jauron. (I'm of the school of thought that a coach can win with a calm or spirited manner. To be honest, Gailey seems to be at a happy medium between the Tony Dungy and Mike Ditka).
Gailey's vast offensive background is the most critical contrast to me. He's been a receivers coach, an offensive coordinator, and a head coach both in college and the NFL. He developed young, unheralded guys like Mike Tomczak and Jay Fiedler during stints in Pittsburgh and Miami. The Bills desperately needed someone who can mold young signal callers.
Jauron's coaching past had roots on defense, and right now, the Bills need a boost in terms of offensive creativeness, explosiveness, and consistency. Gailey may not be the league's most ingenious coordinator, but he definitely knows how to manage an offense.
Lastly, Gailey's been successful in the past. He isn't a guy that coached a team to one winning record like Jauron did with the Bears in 2001. He's actually been on a winner everywhere he's been. That I like the most.
