Chan Gailey brings to Buffalo 38 years of coaching experience. Although he started out as a defensive-minded coach, Gailey quickly excelled as an offensive coordinator once he entered the NFL in 1985 with the Denver Broncos. He's been an offensive coordinator for five different NFL teams (Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs) and he brings plenty of post-season experience to the table. But what effect can Gailey have on a team that averaged 273.9 yards per game (third-worst in the NFL) this past season? It comes down to the talent:

Although he started out as a defensive-minded coach, Gailey quickly excelled as an offensive coach/coordinator once he entered the NFL in 1985 with the Denver Broncos. It comes down to the talent.
Quarterback: Gailey has found success with big-name quarterbacks (John Elway and Troy Aikman) as well as no-name quarterbacks (Jay Fiedler, anyone?) in the past. He may just have to do the latter again with either Ryan Fitzpatrick or Trent Edwards if they wind up being the starter. While drafting or signing a franchise quarterback should be high on his priority list, Gailey mentioned in the press conference that he's not making decisions any time soon.
Running backs vs. Receivers: Gailey has experience running offenses that focus on both the running and the passing game. In Kansas City during the 2008 season, Gailey was able to adapt the Chiefs' game from a running attack into a spread offense. Come back to the Bills and it's interesting to wonder which direction Gailey will take the offense. Lee Evans and Terrell Owens were given high expectations they couldn't quite to live up to in the passing game in 2009, but Fred Jackson made a huge impact on the ground. If Gailey could get Marshawn Lynch going next season, the Bills could emerge from this off-season as a strong running threat. That will help the offense find balance.
Defense: Gailey hinted about running a 3-4 defense in his press conference on Wednesday afternoon. "I’m much more open to the 3-4 than I used to be because I know what a pain it is to go against it every week," Gailey said. For a Bills team that had difficulty against the run this past season, this may help the defense adapt to their opponents during the game and fill in the gaps as needed, especially if they can plug the middle.
