Defense Shines At Bills 'Friday Night Lights' Practice

Defensive coordinator George Edwards maps out his scheme at practice Friday.

The Bills strapped it up for their third practice of the summer, Friday Night Lights-style, in front of a packed house at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford. After opening Thursday with a sparse crowd, Growney Stadium was loaded for the showcased practice -- it definitely got the "game feeling" going in me.

Chris Kelsay, who injured his shoulder during the morning run-through, did not practice. C.J. Spiller, Paul Posluszny and Keith Ellison were the only other notable non-participants. Poz and Ellison are nursing injures but we've really got to get Spiller into camp. The running backs looked good on some occasions, but Spiller must get accustomed to the new system and full-pad hitting that Chan Gailey has incorporated in the early stages. The Club Jauron Era is over.

Trent Edwards continued taking all the first team reps during the 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 drills. Ryan Fitzpatrick worked with the second team with Brian Brohm and Levi Brown following. I'm not really sure why people out there think the pecking order will be any different. Edwards, Fitzpatrick, Brohm and Brown is how I see everything playing out.

To be blatantly honest, the training session wasn't very exciting, which is expected for the third practice of camp.

The majority of the night was spent on positional drills. Lots of stretching and half-speed routes were run. Zzzzz.

The quarterbacks began working exclusively with the tight ends while the offense and defensive lines spared.

There was light red zone work in which Gailey had the running backs run different routes to score 5-yard touchdowns. As you can probably imagine, Edwards was stellar on the short dumpoffs and tosses into the flat to Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson. He still loves those short, high percentages throws.

All kidding aside, Edwards did have a few nice throws on the evening. He fit a ball into the hands of Naaman Roosevelt on a tightly covered slant route. He found James Hardy on a deep sideline route that to my surprise, was totally wide open. However, he did miss high to David Nelson once, and missed Shawn Nelson on a play-action bootleg, a play the Bills ran repeatedly during the night.

His best throw of the night came when he snuck one into Jonathon Stupar on a deep seam route over the linebackers and in front of Donte Whitner. Who knows if Stupar will ever be running down the seam in the game this season.

Overall, the defense dominated the evening.

Cary Harris grabbed the first interception of the evening, and the running game was plugged up by Torell Troup and Spencer Johnson, who are both really tough guys to move. It was refreshing to observe Troup, who commanded double teams for most of the evening. I love the term "bowling bowl" to describe Troup. I'm not saying he'll have a Vince Wilfork-esque season in the middle, but for those of you who are angry with the no-name draftee, he seems to be a player.

After the session ended, Naaman Roosevelt and Donald Jones put in some extra time working on timing with Edwards and Fitzpatrick. Ed Wang and Cornell Green got in some overtime as well, working on footwork with each other. Both were sights you love to see as a fan.
