Bills Offense Generates Optimism

Two impressive outings in a row. Are we on to something here, Bills fans?

Buffalo even surprised me, your biggest Bills optimist, in their 35-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday.

The biggest storyline was Trent Edwards' cementing himself as the starting quarterback after his 13/17, 153-yard performance that included a 12-yard touchdown pass to Roscoe Parrish in the first quarter.

I know it's just the preseason, but I've never seen Edwards look so collected in the pocket. Even during now infamous 5-1 start of 2008, Edwards was playing against what we found out was brutal competition, and he didn't throw two touchdowns in one game until Week 12 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The second Edwards-led touchdown was against the majority of Bengals second-teamers, but I'm

loving the rapport that seems to be materializing between Edwards and Chan Gailey -- the man runs an efficient system.

Parrish is finally becoming an integral part of the Bills' offensive attack. I've been calling for the speedster to be incorporated into the offense since he was drafted, but previous coaches never gave him a chance to succeed. It looks as though Gailey understands that getting the ball in the hands of your elite athletes will boost your offensive numbers.

All these positive reviews, and I have yet to touch on another electric game from rookie running back C.J. Spiller. Now that's a good sign. He scored from a yard out in the second quarter, and juked his way to the end zone on a 20-yard bolt before the half. The kid's burst the corner is unlike any I've seen. On a run in the first half, Spiller looked to be cut off after 12 yards, but exploded around the end to gain an extra eight. The kid is special.

One bit of concern is that Spiller's first runs of the game were for negative yardage. It looked as if he still thought he was in college, where he easily reversed his field to make the big plays on a regular basis. C.J.'s smart, so I firmly believe he'll be fine with taking a two-yard loss instead of running backward in the future.

I don't think the offensive line is miles ahead of where it was last year, but Gailey's system masks any deficiencies -- Edwards was only sacked once.

We thought the defense was going to be one aspect of Buffalo's squad that would be among the league's best. Secondary member Drayton Florence frequently Tweets about the Bills having the best secondary in the NFL. Safety Donte Whitner has joined the boasting, telling national media outlets that Buffalo's safeties are tops in professional football.

For the second straight week, against elite quarterbacks, the first team defense was abused, especially those very same defensive backs that were ready to "shut down" Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco. Carson Palmer fit a few balls into small windows, but for the most part, he carved up the defense and both of his touchdown passes were thrown to wide open receivers.

Torell Troup got the start at NT, and in the few 3-4 looks we saw, Troup had trouble getting any push, but did command double teams often. His biggest impact will be felt if he's kept fresh by being used as a situational nose. Marcus Stroud and Kyle Williams remain the "distrupters" on the defensive front.

The transition to the 3-4 is still a work in progress, but we've got to see more consistency with the defense getting off the field if the Bills are going to surprise anyone.

Overall, I was overjoyed with the performance put on by the first team, and was glad the second and third-string guys were able to hold the lead.

Ryan Fitzpatrick has got to be the back-up signal caller, and David Nelson's the team's third or fourth wideout - he's silky smooth and caught his second touchdown of the preseason.

We're probably in for a full game of backups when the Bills play the Lions in Detroit on Thursday night for the last tuneup before the home opener against the Miami Dolphins.

For once, I've got a good feeling after a preseason.
