Among the 19 cuts today by the Buffalo Bills, there were quite a few surprises to say the least. Let’s take a look at the full list, then dissect it.

C Sean Allen

RB Andre Anderson

RB Joique Bell

QB Levi Brown

G Kirk Chambers

DE Rashaad Duncan

FB Rodney Ferguson

C Christian Gaddis

TE Andrew George

WR James Hardy

T Nick Hennessey

WR Chad Jackson

CB Ellis Lankster

G Andre Ramsey

WR Naaman Roosevelt

CB Lydell Sargeant

RB Chad Simpson

G Jason Watkins

LB Donovan Woods

QB: Levi Brown: This was a major shock. Everyone believed that the quarterback position would be a battle of Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brian Brohm. Brown seemed a lock because he was the only quarterback taken by the new regime and Bills head coach Chan Gailey has praised him throughout the OTA’s, minicamps, and the preseason. I’m thinking that they realized Brohm was not ready to be the back-up, and with Trent Edwards’ injury history, they wanted a guy like Fitzpatrick in there in case Edwards went down. I can see Bills GM Buddy Nix crossing his fingers now that Brown is not picked up by another team and that he can be assigned to the practice squad.

WR: James Hardy: The former 2nd round pick out of the University of Indiana never amounted to much during his short tenure with the Bills. Hardy was supposed to be that big red zone threat the Bills’ offense had needed for such a long time, but then he became plagued with injuries and off-the-field issues, so the Bills went out and landed free agent Terrell Owens last year. There is no question that when healthy, Hardy could become a very good NFL wide receiver. But the question is which team will take a chance on him? It would be a low-risk/ high-reward pickup by any of the remaining 31 teams.

RB: Gailey is known for designing offenses that fit that strengths of the personnel, and the Bills’ offense has three quality running backs on their roster, and the plan appears to involve pounding the rock as much as possible. Many believed that Gailey would keep four RB’s on the 53 man roster, but with the cuts of Joique Bell and Chad Simpson, it only leaves the three-headed monster of Fred Jackson, C.J. Spiller, and Marshawn Lynch. Bell was a surprising cut, considering the promise he was showing since inking a free-agent deal with the Bills following the draft. Buddy Nix will also be crossing his fingers on sneaking him onto the practice squad.

The Bills also cut former second-round WR Chad Jackson. With Hardy and Jackson’s departures, two undrafted wide receivers made the team-- David Nelson and Donald Jones. Nelson flat out earned his spot on this team, and Jones, in my opinion, was kept over Hardy and Jackson because of his special teams ability.

There also were a good amount of notable cuts made on Saturday throughout the NFL that will intrigue other teams. Names that include:

QB Matt Leinart

WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh

QB Pat White

LB Derrick Burgess

C Justin Hartwig

WR Michael Clayton

RB Willie Parker

Look for the Bills to try to find another tight end (Chase Coffman maybe?) to add to their roster in the next 48 hours. The Bills have been depleted again at the position and will be looking to upgrade. Also, look for more OL depth to be added as well.
