Sizing Up Camp Battles For Bills

The arrival of Tyler Thigpen and even Brad Smith should be a welcome addition to Ryan Fitzpatrick, as it will give him another player to share the reps with, so he gets a break more often. Levi Brown, on the other hand, may not be smiling, as now he will have to look over his shoulder. Smith is listed as a quarterback but can play a bunch of other positions. With the new NFL rules, the Bills will probably look to keep him on as the third QB and then insert him into the game at different times, using him in the wildcat formation, at wide receiver, as a running back, and, of course, on special teams.

Drayton Florence (above) was re-signed and will be coming back into camp and will be fighting for a starting job. It's going to be an interesting battle with Terrence McGee, Leodis McKelvin and Florence fighting for the two starting cornerback positions. The other thing is that rookie Aaron Williams has already impressed at camp and is leading the team with two interceptions. So there's a chance that the loser of that battle might be traded or cut. There's no way that Williams will be fourth on the depth chart, especially after the Bills used a high second-round pick on him.

The final acquisition is Nick Barnett from the Green Bay Packers. He's coming over to fill a big hole, after the Bills lost Paul Posluszny. He brings with him, a Super Bowl ring and plenty of experience, especially in the 3-4 defense that the team plans on using a lot this season. Another reason why they brought him in, is to mentor the young guys. Barnett has already been at camp watching the defense, studying the playbook, and bonding with his new teammates since he was signed on Sunday afternoon. He was even spotted a couple times helping out rookie Kelvin Sheppard. Look for him to insert himself right into the role of inside linebacker, next to Andra Davis and become the new leader of the team.
