Playing the Lions at home is the cure for what ails you. The Ravens were a little sloppy at the beginning of the game before turning it into a rout (without the help of Mark Clayton, Jared Gaither and Ed Reed). The Lions actually proved to be worse than the Browns.
Offense. It all clicked today. They started fast. They finished strong. And by game’s end, the Ravens had put up 548 yards. The offensive line was secure. Ray Rice (who had a 59-yard touchdown run, plus another rush for 52 and a catch for 30), Derrick Mason (with a spectacular 62-yard TD reception), Todd Heap (a 31-yard grab) and Demetrius Williams (who hauled in a pass for 34 yards) all made big plays. And Joe Flacco rebounded from Monday night’s weak performance to effectively lead the offense. Even backup QB Troy Smith got in on the act with a rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter. But most important, the running game was huge — 308 yards and five scores on 40 carries. When Rice took a seat on the bench near the beginning of the second half with 219 total yards on 17 touches, Willis McGahee scored twice and ran for 76 yards on just 12 carries and big Le’Ron McClain toted the ball six times for 32 yards. It doesn’t matter that this was done against the Lions. The offense was a force. Grade: A
Defense. The Ravens held Detroit to just 229 yards on offense, 3.2 yards per carry and 3.7 yards per pass, which is impressive. They also successfully defended eight passes, and Tom Zbikowski and Chris Carr each had an interception. The Ravens got more pressure on the quarterback, although even with the return of Terrell Suggs, they still had just one sack. No doubt the Lions’ talent is lacking, but surrendering just three points against an NFL team is never a bad thing. Grade: A
Special Teams. The Ravens kicked off a lot on Sunday and for the most part, their coverage teams were solid, not allowing any big plays. Sam Koch got both of his punts inside the 20, and Billy Cundiff was perfect with two field goals and six extra points. Lardarius Webb was nothing special on kick returns, but Carr, again, was stellar on punts. Grade: B
