Week 5 Prediction: Ravens By 10

This is a must-win game for the Ravens. Before the season began, it looked like their schedule wouldn’t be too difficult. But with two games remaining against both the Bengals and the Steelers, plus home dates against Denver, Indy and Chicago and going on the road to Minnesota and Green Bay, suddenly the schedule looks like a house of horrors. (At least they get to play the Lions and Raiders.)
The Ravens are coming off a tough road loss, and winning at home against the Bengals could be an indicator of how the rest of the season will go. But the same question we’ve been wondering all season comes up again this week: How will the Ravens’ passing defense hold up against a potentially dynamic passing offense?
It still doesn’t seem like the secondary is getting out-talented. Yes, Domonique Foxworth gave up a touchdown against Randy Moss on a big blitzing play, but other than that, he’s been very solid. Of course, having Samari Rolle as the nickel back would certainly help. But the problem still seems to be that the Ravens front four aren’t getting much penetration on passing plays and that they’re not pressuring the opposing quarterback enough. Perhaps this will be the week that defensive coordinator Greg Mattison calls some exotic blitzes.
The Bengals’ defense, led by defensive end Antwan Odom and his eight sacks, is vastly improved over the past few seasons. But their run defense is right in the middle of the league, which is something the Ravens should use to their advantage. Obviously, if left tackle Jared Gaither is out, that could affect things. But I think even with Michael Oher at left tackle and Marshal Yanda on the right side, the Ravens need to — and will — take it to the Bengals on the ground. This works for two reasons: It would help the Ravens offensively and it would aid them defensively by keeping Carson Palmer and Chad Ochocinco off the field.
This game will be tough, but I expect the Ravens to prove that they’re the better team. Look for the Ravens to come out loud and angry and take back the lead in the AFC North. Prediction: Ravens, 27-17.
