It wasn’t pretty, but they did it.
For the first time in 44 years, the Atlanta Falcons have posted back-to-back winning seasons. While it is a small milestone for most franchises, it is huge for the Dirty Birds, who have lacked consistency throughout their history.
Atlanta’s offensive unit didn’t look pretty at times but got the job done in Tampa Bay.
School is in session for one final time this season. Let’s take a look at how the offense faired in the team's 20-10 win.
Quarterback: It looked like Matt Ryan regressed back to grade school. Granted, the Atlanta QB’s overall numbers were decent. He completed 23 of 35 passes for 223 yards and a pair of scores. However, Ryan also got back to some bad habits and tossed a pair of interceptions that may have proven costly but for the fact that the Falcons were taking on the saberless Bucs. Grade: C
Running Backs: The reason the Falcons won this one. Jason Snelling had a career day, reaching triple digits for the first time in his NFL career. Snelling’s 147 yards put a dagger through the heart of that vengeful Falcon that sought to doom the franchise once again to mediocrity. Because of Snelling’s solid game, Atlanta dominated the time of possession by almost 11 minutes and won the game. Grade: A
With Michael Turner hobbled again, Jason Snelling helped the Falcons control the clock and beat the Bucs.
Receivers: Not awful, but not the reason the Falcons won this football game. Roddy White was held under 100 yards receiving once again, but managed to grab a touchdown. Justin Peelle had three catches for 38 yards and a score while Tony Gonzalez will go into 2010 stuck on 999 career receptions after grabbing three of Ryan’s throws for 30 yards. Grade: B+
Offensive Line: The O-line had a very good end to the 2009 season. Ryan was sacked just once and had ample time to complete his passes. The Atlanta offensive unit finished with 397 yards. Snelling and Jerious Norwood combined for 174 yards on the ground thanks to the holes ripped open by the line. Grade: A-
